Underwood High School senior Kindra Peterson was recently honored with the Class A Triple-A award for excellence in the Arts, Academics and Athletics.  She is the seventh Underwood student so honored.  She also had a unique high school athletic career, playing for the Hillcrest girls’ soccer team which has a co-op with Underwood, playing basketball for the Rockets, and wearing the Ottertail Central softball uniform as she participated in that spring sport with students from Battle Lake and Henning.

Softball Coach Jan Eitzen said, “Kindra’s speed and tracking of the ball earned her the spot in the OTC outfield.  Once she is on base, Kindra pressures the defense by threatening to use her speed to take the next base.  She is a natural leader that continues to nurture her skills.  Her leadership is valued by the Bulldogs both on the field and in the dugout.  Her hard work, determination and character are things that can be modeled and pursued by every athlete, regardless of physical ability.  She is a positive teammate that isn’t afraid to say hard things, yet speaks life into others.  Her teammates recognize that and selected her as a captain.  Kindra’s abilities and leadership will be missed.”

“I have learned an infinite number of lessons in my athletic career,” shared Peterson.  “From time management and team organization, to leadership and teamwork.  I have been very fortunate to have coaches and mentors that have gone the extra mile to teach me how sports can extend beyond the field or court.  My favorite sports memories came in my eighth grade year when we played Fergus Falls in soccer and went to overtime, and in 2018 when we had a buzzer-beater shot to win against Wheaton in the Sub-Section championship game in basketball.”

Peterson plans on attending the University of Minnesota on the Twin Cities campus, but us undecided at the time as to a major.  She also hopes to play club and intramural soccer.  Kindra’s favorite high school subjects were Band and Calculus.

“I’ve been throwing myself into my school work and working on a lot of home projects this spring,” said Peterson.  “It has been tough to be at home and away from everyone, but I’m trying to make the most of it by staying in touch and staying active.”

Her soccer coach Jeremy Mueller said, “Kindra was everything a coach could ask for - impeccable character, a team-first attitude, a fearless competitor and a mentor for younger players.    She was a constant model of integrity, faith, commitment and loyalty.  Her strength and enthusiasm over her time with us was one of the most significant factors behind our team's success.”

Her favorite quote comes from Nelson Mandela who said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.  It is the difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
