The Barnesville Trojans beat the Underwood Rockets in four sets on Tuesday night, winning 25-27, 25-12, 25-20, 25-13).  “Our girls played a very strong, competitive first set tonight,” said Underwood Head Coach Breck Grove.  “Overall, Barnesville was more experienced and played more consistently throughout the match.”

The Rockets were led by Ezrah Baker (9 kills), Becca Johnson (15/15 serving, 1 ace, 12 digs) and Kallyn Grove (28 set assists, 6 kills, 10/11 serving, 1 ace).

“We wore blue tonight to show support for the Rothsay Head volleyball coach, John Reber who is currently undergoing a medical condition and is unable to be in the gym coaching his team,” said Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “In the first set tonight we got off to a rocky start battling with ourselves on serve receive. We struggled to get a pass up on the net to attack. Once we got going in a rhythm we were able to make a run, however the Underwood serves still forced some errors on our side of the net. We definitely need to be more confident in our passing and move ourselves out of those situations much quicker than we did tonight. We made a strong run to the finish, however we still came up a little short in the first set.”

The Trojans were able to get it together for the next three sets to record the non-conference win.  They were led by Anna Stanford (12 kills, 17/17 serving, 2 aces, 12 digs), Lexi Bolgrean (11 kills, 12/14 serving 1 ace, 21 digs), Katie Newell (32 set assists, 10/12 serving, 1 ace, 13 digs, 2 block assists), Kenzie Skogen (14 digs, 12/13 serving), Emily Smith (18/18 serving, 1 ace, 5 kills) and Emily Bredman (7 kills, 2 solo blocks, 2 block assists).

“Underwood is a good team with a strong right side attack that can catch you off guard if you are not prepared,” noted Coach Askegaard. “We were a little hesitant in our attack tonight and came with a tip too often. We did make some great hustle plays tonight and our defense came up big for us. Anna and Lexi really worked the net from the outside tonight from our passing that was a little off. Our block looked good up on the net and our short defense was ready for tips coming over the net.”

Barnesville will be at home against Frazee on Thursday, while Underwood will host Battle Lake in their next match also on Thursday.
